About Joel Freedman, MA, LMHCA
My calm, accepting, culturally-sensitive approach makes it easy to discuss your immediate situation and deeper issues. I encourage transparency and honesty in therapy, and many find my open demeanor reassuring.
I'm a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate (LMHCA, WA Reg. MC60602145) and a professional member of the the American Association for Marriage & Family Therapy (AAMFT). I received my Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from City University of Seattle in 2015. My undergraduate degree in history and political science is from the University of Victoria, BC, where I also undertook graduate work in history. I later studied law at Birkbeck College, University of London and trained as a mediator with the Dispute Resolution Center of King County in Seattle.
My years of experience as a community organizer, historian, and mediator assist me in discerning both the bigger picture and the personal themes in peoples’ lives.
I support the importance of professional community as a member of the International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT), Seattle-area networking co-chair with the Washington Association for Marriage & Family Therapy (WAMFT), and Treasurer of the Seattle Counselors Association (SCA).
I'm in the process of becoming a certified therapist in Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples (EFT-C), which emphasizes the importance of connection and communication in relationships, I’ve also completed post-degree training with Dr. Robert Elliot in Emotion Focused Therapy for individuals (EFT-I). With additional training in Gottman and Mindfulness-based approaches, I employ a range of techniques recognized as effective by the profession based on their fit with your situation.
I welcome your questions and active participation in our work together.
